VANCOUVER, 30 December 2024 – The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver commemorated the 128th anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. José Rizal, the Philippines’ national hero, with a meaningful program attended by Consulate personnel and consular clients.
Aligned with this year’s theme, “Rizal sa Bagong Pilipinas: Buhay at Aral, Aming Nilalandas,” the event highlighted Dr. Rizal’s enduring legacy of patriotism, education, and advocacy for social justice.
The commemoration began with the singing of the Philippine National Anthem, followed by a message from Consul General Gina A. Jamoralin, who reflected on Rizal’s life and the relevance of his ideals in fostering a progressive and united Filipino nation. A poignant reading of Rizal’s iconic poem, “A La Juventud Filipina” (To the Filipino Youth), by representatives from the Knights of Rizal (Vancouver Chapter) further underscored the importance of empowering the youth as the hope of the nation.
A floral offering was held at the bust of Dr. José Rizal within the Consulate premises, to show respect and gratitude for his sacrifice and contributions to Philippine independence and identity.
To engage consular clients in this significant commemoration, the Consulate also screened the documentary “Rizal: Sa Landas ng Paglaya” at the consular area.
As part of the celebration, champorado, a beloved Filipino comfort food, was offered to all attendees, including consular clients. This simple yet heartfelt gesture fostered a sense of community and camaraderie among the attendees while honoring Filipino traditions. END
