Two Filipino Artists Shine at Art Vancouver 2024: Karissa Narukami and William Orsua

VANCOUVER, 15 April 2024 – Art Vancouver 2024, one of the most anticipated art events of the year, witnessed a remarkable display of talent from Canada and around the globe from 11 to 14 April 2024 at the Vancouver Convention Center. Among the artists featured at the event were Filipino-Japanese Karissa Narukami and Filipino-Canadian William Orsua, whose unique styles and compelling narratives captivated audiences.

Karissa, a Filipina artist diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at the age of two, defied expectations with her extraordinary talent. She is into all forms of art - drawing, painting, and sculpting. Karissa’s featured artwork, "Princess Chieko," not only garnered attention for its stunning aesthetics but also earned the prestigious honor of being selected for the Lunar Codex Polaris Collection. This means that Narukami's art will be preserved in a time capsule by NASA and sent to the moon.  Her foundation, Karissa Narukami Autism Foundation, hosts free art classes for children and youth, including those with autism and other developmental disabilities.

William, another Filipino artist showcased at Art Vancouver 2024, brings a unique perspective to the world of photography. He excels in various genres such as landscape, wedding, portrait, and corporate photography, showcasing a blend of creative insight and technical expertise in each image he crafts.  His collection at the exhibit included a photo of the Mayon Volcano. William is a respiratory therapist by trade who turned an unexpected hobby into a second career as a photographer. He currently owns Soul Mate Productions, a professional photography company.

The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver, led by Consul General Arlene T. Magno, visited the booths of William and Karissa.  The Vancouver International Art Fair, locally known as Art Vancouver, is the largest contemporary art fair in Western Canada. END.
