NEW WESTMINSTER, BC, 20 February 2025 – Balai in the Borough, a new Filipino dining experience, officially opened its doors to the public on 19 February 2025 in New Westminster, British Columbia. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by Consul Analyn Ratonel, Balai restaurant owners Evelyn Lopez and Luzviminda Antonio, and Mr. Ernesto Ong of Rotary Club of Vancouver Mountainview (RCVM). The event marked the beginning of a new chapter in the growing appreciation for Filipino cuisine in the region.
The Filipino restaurant, named “Balai,” which translates to “home” in Filipino, emphasizes a welcoming atmosphere and offers an authentic taste of the Philippines.
Following the ribbon-cutting, guests enjoyed a delicious spread of Filipino dishes, expertly prepared to showcase the diverse flavors and cultural richness of Filipino cuisine. The menu includes time-honored favorites such as adobo, kare-kare, lechon kawali, sisig, and sinigang along with an array of freshly prepared desserts like saba con yelo and halo-halo, offering a true taste of the Philippines.
The Consulate expressed its pride in the opening of the restaurant, highlighting its role in promoting Filipino food and culture within British Columbia. Owner Evelyn, who has long been passionate about introducing Filipino food to a wider audience, thanked guests for their support and enthusiasm. Balai is the second restaurant owned and managed by Ms. Evelyn, who also operates called Grandt Kitchen in Surrey, BC.
Balai Restaurant is now open to the public and invites food lovers from all backgrounds to enjoy the authentic tastes of the Philippines in the heart of New Westminster, British Columbia. END
