11 June 2023 – The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver, led by Consul General Arlene T. Magno, joined the Royal City Sister City Society in a parade and flag raising ceremony held at the Friendship Garden in the City of New Westminster on 11 June 2023 to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.
The Philippine flag was raised by Consul General Magno, together with Acting Mayor Nadine Nakagawa, Councillor Maita Santiago, Councillor Ruby Campbell, and Royal City Sister City Society President Annie Jalac-Miles.
During the program, Acting Mayor Nakagawa read the Filipino Heritage Month and Philippine Independence Day Proclamation signed by Mayor Patrick Johnstone. The Proclamation cited “June 12 as a day to reflect on the many contributions Filipino‐Canadians have made to the economic development of Canada.” The Proclamation likewise acknowledged the contributions made by the Filipino Community particularly to the City of New Westminster, which is the sister city of Quezon City.
In her message, Consul General Arlene T. Magno said that this is an opportune time to celebrate the achievements and aspirations of the Filipino community who contribute to the social and economic development of Canada. END
