“MANA: CONVERSATIONS WITH FILIPINO CULTURE BEARERS” – A CONVERSATION WITH SALIKA MAGUINDANAO

Salika learned to weave langkit at a young age. When her hometown was devastated by conflict, she drew on this skill to provide livelihood for herself and her fellow Maranao women.

At the time, langkit weaving was a dwindling practice. Together with her family, they established Maranao Collectibles Service Cooperative, a social enterprise that provides heirloom langkit textiles as well as other Maranao cultural items. Their work has revived traditional weaving in their community and given other opportunities for Maranao men and women.

We talk to Salika as she

shares the culture of the Maranaos, their work to preserve their heritage, and how they strive to overcome adversity during the current pandemic.
