Philippine Flag Raised in New Westminster in Commemoration of PH Independence Day and Filipino Heritage Month

14 June 2024 – The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver, led by Consul General Arlene Magno, joined the Filipino Community in New Westminter in its flag raising ceremony, in commemoration of the 126^th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence and the Filipino Heritage Month in Canada, at the Friendship Garden on 09 June 2024.

Consul General Magno, in her message, highlighted the 75th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Canada.  She also underscored the Bagong Pilipinas campaign of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., which represents a new chapter in our nation's journey.

Acting Mayor Nadine Nakagawa read the Filipino Heritage Month and Philippine Independence Day Proclamation signed by Mayor Patrick Johnstone. The Proclamation acknowledged the contributions made by the Filipino community to Canada and, in particular, to the City of New Westminster. Likewise, Councillor Ruby Campbell and MLA Jennifer Whiteside both delivered their greetings and well wishes.

The event was organized by the Royal City Sister City Society (RCSCS), led by its President, Ms. Anicia Jalac-Miles.  The Sister City Memorandum of Agreement between Quezon City and New Westminster was established thirty-three years ago. END
