COCONUT
The name coconut is actually a combination of the word, “nut”, and the Portuguese word, “coco”, which means goblin. But is a coconut really a nut? Or is it a fruit? Or a seed? The coconut is actually a drupe and not a nut. Just like mangoes, cashews and cherries, technically the coconut is a drupe. It is the fruit of the coconut palm.
“The amazing thing about the coconut palm is that it provides almost all the necessities of life: food, drink, oil, medicine, fiber, timber, thatch, mats, fuel, and domestic utensils, as well as serving important environmental services such as soil erosion control in coastal regions, wind protection and shade for other crops.” -- Craig R. Elevitch, Author of various books on tropical agriculture
In the Philippines, and the Asia-Pacific region, the coconut is referred to as the “tree of life” because every part of it has some use for mankind, from the roots of the palm tree to the trunk to the leaves to the drupe. And, amazingly, most of these parts have commercial value.
